Good Pulled Pork sandwiches with decent amount of meat, yummy beans (no they don't taste like ranch), and tender and yummy collard greens- after you add hot sauce. Didn't get any cornbread since I'm not a fan of corn chunks in my cornbread, but the size of a piece is pretty big. I definitely recommend this place. Oh and try the sauces you might like them.

Do you enjoy horrible customer service and possibly your meal barely worth the tray it's served on? Well you're in luck! Urban BBQ has just that, a miserable cashier that acts like a high school girl going through puberty and food that will be guaranteed to make you question your purchase. Personally, I enjoy at least decent customer service and at least decent food. Won't be eating here ever again.

I used to be and still WANT to be a fan of this spot! Pulled pork was tasty, despite the chunk of pure fat in my order. Brisket was a little tough, but still ok. The front desk woman/girl is so unpleasant that I may never return, however. Curt answers, back turned to me while I was talking. Could anyone care any less about my questions or my order? I think the ownership changed last year and perhaps the current owner does not care about word of mouth or return customers. It's a free country, though. Here's a tip: You get a lot more love when you spend your money at the Vietnamese restaurant around from the CVS nearby. They have grilled pork on the menu... Back to the Urban BBQ food: Greens have a good flavor even though they are chopped a little too much. Cornbread is yummy. Mashed potato gravy is super. But the service undoes all of the good taste in your mouth. This restaurant might have split from the Urban Bar-B-Que chain that has spots in Rockville and Olney. That could explain the difference in civility.

One of the better bar-b-que spots in the DMV that has not gone full-on commercial and stills cares about what their customer think, want and feel. Have tried both the beef and pork ribs and loved them both. Of course the beef ribs are bigger and more hearty than the pork, but I prefer the flavor of the smaller pork ribs with a little extra sauce and a side of Texas toast or cornbread and some hot french fries.

The pulled pork is very salty, the fries had no seasoning, and the chicken sausage was unremarkable. It comes out decently quick but the food is not good at all. Even the BBQ sauces are just plain and tasteless. We really need good bbq joints in this area and I really wish these guys would step their game up.

The chick who works behind the counter, Monica, is one of the most unpleasant human beings I have ever encountered. Her attitude is terrible and she has ZERO customer service skills. My beef ribs were tough and I brought them back to get something different. No apology, no offer for something else, just asked if I was keeping the sides and tried to charge me for them. I sort of get it, but if all you are going to do is throw my side of fries in the trash why can't I keep it? I will never be back to this location.

Always tasty, however, the cuts of meat are inconsistent... And often disappointing. The first time we went the pulled pork was tender, as was the brisket. The next time, the "pulled pork" was stiffened meat ends. On another visit, my brisket was tough and dry. I really like consistency in a BBQ joint (and I only like tender meats). Their sauces are good, and their sides are tasty (but, when I dish out for good meat... I want the good cuts please.) - it's not a steak joint... They can see what they are serving up.

Ever since I realized there's an Urban BBQ closer than Rockville a few weeks ago, I've been getting my BBQ fix from here. I usually order ahead on the phone and it's ready for pick up in 10 mins. I haven't encountered any issues with the staff but I'm usually in and out. The food- still tasty and delicious. The collards with bacon bits are bomb! The wings- bomb. The corn bread with actual corn kernels- warm with a little honey butter good (not bomb, but good). The pulled pork- yes lawd its bomb! Its juicy, flavorful and can put you down for a nap with no problems. I will say the brisket it better at Rockville. The last time I got brisket here it was like they had it sitting in water or something because it fell apart, not like a pulled pork fell apart more of a disintegration due to sitting in a liquid. Still a great place for BBQ near Silver Spring. Even though there is room to sit down, I'd keep it to a pay and pick up operation. (3.5 stars)

  • Travis S.

Quick service!the staff were friendly I will admit the wings are fire. However, I found a piece of hair in my mac and cheese no bueno. The staff were like hey who's hair is this? I was like uh no funny. I left with no refund or nothing I will not be return.

Overpriced Ribs are aiiight, I bet they would be great if they were Fresh, I tired out the soul of egg rolls whatever they are called... if it wasn't for the picture that yelp provided I would of never known they were egg rolls ....I would get these again I had originally ordered coleslaw but decided to get mac after a customer exchanged her coleslaw ... she said the vinegar was overwhelming. Brisket was cold !!!!!! Mac was ehhhhhh

  • Thu N.

Quick service and nice staff but food was meh. Chicken was okay, not great but the pulled pork and mac n cheese was salty. Highlight of my meal was the cole slaw which probably wouldn't even meet most standards. Famous Dave's is better than this joint.

  • Niki D.

The service was good. Apparently there's new owners and it's been newly renovated. All of that is awesome... The bbq came out of a small plastic bag that appeared to have been microwaved. It wasn't fresh. It was dry. It was overpriced. Never. Again.

Worst catering experience ever. These guys were 1. 45 minutes late 2. Brought 18 forks & knives when I paid for 25 people to be fed. 3. Brought a salad with bacon on it when I explicitly asked Matt, the manager, for a green vegetable without pork in it. 4. The mac & cheese looks like it was prepared by Kraft.

I'm originally from the south and feel comfortable in saying I think I know good BBQ. The BBQ here is fantastic! I had the pulled pork and my husband had the brisket. This BBQ is so good it can stand alone! The sauces they offer are tasty and are a wonderful compliment to their meat. My picky eater son loved the Mac n cheese! The collard greens are delicious. If you have the opportunity to eat here-take it! The staff is also very friendly.

Wow..terrible customer service. I got yelled at by a girl behind the counter because I was reading the menu and didn't know what I wanted to order, specifically she said "what are you doing? you can come up here to order" then proceeds to mumble loudly about how she doesn't understand people who stand there and won't come up to the register. Okay, I get you're working on a Sunday and you're probably upset but does that mean you have to be rude to your customers? I ordered the pulled chicken and brisket with a side of cole slaw and corn bread. The cornbread is not overly sweet and has pieces of corn in it and is the size of your hand. The brisket and chicken were good but too sweet for my taste. I ended up using the different sauces they had on the table. Coleslaw is more vinegar based than mayo and is more on the savory side. If the same girl is working behind the counter next time, I'm going to walk by to another place. Sorry!

Great food. Nice specials, too. One nit: Sweet Potato fries (delicious!) are packed in a styrofoam cup. The hot fries tend to melt the cup here and there. Well, that's not cool, thinking that there could be some trace polystyrene on my food. Change those containers!

4.5 stars! I'm a BBQ-lovin girl in a pork-free world and Urban has heard my silent plea. The skies opened and the heavens rejoiced when I learned that they started selling... BEEF RIBS!!! These aint no lil ol short ribs either. I call em brontosaurus ribs because I swear they look like something I've seen on the Flintstones! Sharpen your teeth and ready your taste buds because you are in for a TREAT! Thick meaty ribs with a sweet and smoky sauce... YAAAAASSSSSS!! You're gonna need both hands to lift these bad boys, and a good strong set of jaws... oh, and some really good floss for later. The menu varies based on location and so far I think Hillandale is the only one that has them. I personally like to start with some soul rolls (BBQ brisket in an EGG ROLL!! LAWD!!!) and follow up with a side of mac and cheese... but that's just me. Make sure that at some point you also try the redneck fondue... you'll thank me. Surprisingly, they also fry a decent piece of catfish. Who knew? If you're feeling healthy (ha!) but still have a taste for 'cue, then the taco salad is just what you need. I've tried other BBQ places in the area, but nothing else even comes close!

Great bbq especially for this area. Had the pulled pork and the brisket with mac and cheese corn bread and it was delicious. Update: went for lunch today and they are under new management and have a new look. The food has changed and the place seems more like a chain restaurant. The bbq is made and taste different and not anywhere near as good as before. The only thing I can think of is they bought the place without the house recipe's. Why else would you ruin a good thing?

Not worth the price tag. The food didn't taste fresh and the chicken tasted like it had been microwaved. Was not impressed.

Urban BBQ is a pretty decent barbecue joint. Plainly put, they make stuff the way you want your neighbor to make it when he invites you over to watch football on a Saturday in September. I've been here three times, and my favorite was the cheesesteak. Instead of serving the steak on a footlong hoagie bun, they divide it onto two sandwich buns with a dash of lettuce and a thick tomato. See photo. The steak was juicy and tender and it was a decent cheesesteak. I've also had the beef brisket sandwich, and the pulled pork platter, and I think the real star here is the meat. It's just tasty and seasoned and melt-in-your-mouth good. Everything else I've had on the side (cornbread, cole slaw, fries) was nothing to write home about, but it was acceptable alongside the BBQ meat. The fries were plain, and the cole slaw I had was to heavy on the mustard. The meat dishes are pricey compared to fast food, but I feel that the quality warrants the price. If you like BBQ, you'll pay the difference. A few other notes: there are rolls of paper towels and 3-4 choices of BBQ sauce (sweet, vinegar-based, mustard based) at each table. The dining room is small, maybe 12-15 small tables, but it has never been too packed when I've been there. A couple TV's usually have ESPN on, and the root beer and sweet tea are pretty delish. Just writing about it is making my mouth water!

Transcript of a 911 Call: Dispatcher: Hello, 911 Emergency, how can I assist you? Me: Help! I'd like to report an assault in progress Dispatcher: Are you ok? The police are on the way Me: My stomach is being assaulted by some horrible food at this fake BBQ place called Urban BBQ Dispatcher: How many assailants were present sir? Me: *counting on fingers*...There were seven of them. Dispatcher: I know this is difficult sir but......can you describe them? Me: My PTSD is kicking in...but I'll try. -There were these bbq wings. They were scrawny and dry. The sauce was ok but there wasn't enough of it. -There was a piece of celery who I think was friends with the wings. They traveled together in the same carton. The celery had been written on with black marker. -There was a bbq beef brisket sandwich. The brisket was also dry, gray and there was not enough bbq sauce. -There were mashed potatoes and mac 'n cheese, both of which tasted bland and of the boxed variety. -There were those two heavy set "soul rolls". They were absolutely disgusting. Cold on the inside with tasteless beef and melted cheese. Super thick shell. -Finally, the ringleader was the redneck fondue. It was this dip that had cold beef sauce on the bottom and hardened cheddar cheese on top. Sick sick stuff! Dispatcher: You did really well sir. We have all the info we need Me: I hope that you stop them from hurting others. Especially that redneck fondue. If rednecks really do eat that stuff then that whole inbreeding "rumor" might be true! Dispatcher: We will try our best sir. In the meantime, I'm going to transfer you to our Special Victims Unit. It sounds like your wallet was also victimized without the courtesy of a free drink. Detectives Benson and Stabler are pros and will take good care of you. For future reference, I encourage you to remember that BBQ is best left to the professionals below the Mason-Dixon line. Also, whenever you go out looking for a "good time", make sure you use protection.....via Yelp of course. Me: Ummm....thank you. I don't know what I was thinking. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!

Absolutely disgusting! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it came on a bun that was so hard it would break a tooth. The pulled pork was dry and tasteless. Ate half of the pork with a fork and donated the remainder to the trash can. How anybody would like this crappy sandwich is unbelievable to me.

Having been here twice, I have a hankerin for some more ROFLMAOBBQ again. I've had the brisket, pork and beef ribs, and many of the menu items. I will say that my favorite is the beef ribs. There is sauce on the table, so you can doctor up your food however you like. Prices are a little high, but it's meat, and delicious meat at that. The specials and combo plates allow you to try out a number of different dishes, so I would recommend that to anyone who is going here for the first time. You will definitely have plenty of food. The portions are generous, and I am usually not able to finish what I get. If you do have some room left over in that tum tum of yours, definitely try the doughnut bread pudding. HOLY MOLY. They take donuts from dunkin donuts and make a pudding dessert out of it. (They told me that they take out the chocolate donuts since they don't look as nice when cooked). I will definitely go here again. It's a little less hectic than some other places like Hill Country, and closer to me than others as well. Watch out for bad drivers though. We've had one woman in a minivan pull a u-turn almost directly into us as we're leaving.

I'm a regular here at urban BBQ first of all they have done some renovations and given it a new look. Seating was better before the renovations. They also significantly scaled back the menu. I think they are creating disaster the menu before was a lot better. Secondly they are Overpriced! The food is good for a nice BBQ experience but not great. I would rather have a real BBQ experience elsewhere. Not really sure if I'm returning. Just haven't had a consistent BBQ experience here. The wings and ribs are decent. Along with the chili. The salad is absolutely awful. Cornbread is good but they completely removed it from the front counter. I'm probably going to try the pulled pork and chicken before I completely pull the plug however, I ordered the beef brisket sandwich this visit. The brisket was good but not mouthwatering I asked for coleslaw on top the coleslaw wasn't great. The bread was waxy and dry. Overall disappointing. I paid thirteen dollars and not satisfied. I would say urban BBQ is not always a solid experience. I believe they need to change the bread on the brisket. Coleslaw should be shredded and not chopped. And it doesn't taste homemade. The brisket was thick slices and meet but tough and fatty and dry. Overall, food experience is becoming forgettable.

Absolutely Perfect pulled pork sandwich. Better than the rockville store. Love the Carolina sauce. the side order of greens is absolutely superb! wish I lived closer!

Good food. Nice taste. Good bbq and smoke flavors. Cornbread and greens are real side standouts. Ribs are ok. Pork ribs are best. Sliced beef is great. Chicken is ok. Pulled chicken sandwich is a must. The unfortunate reality is that the service is bad...for a "walk up and order" place the counter staff is rude and gives the impression that I am in the way or am an interruption. That kills the experience, the food and closes my wallet. I can get abused elsewhere for better food.

I have ordered from the New Hampshire location only. The staff are patient as I never know what to order. The food has been fantastic on every visit. I have had the moist barbecue chicken, smoked sausage, greens, cornbread and mac and cheese. The taste was absolutely amazing. Will I go back?....Heck yeah :)

This is an assessment of the one in Silver Spring off of New Hampshire Avenue. I haven't been to any other Urban BBQ's but have been to this one quite a bit. RUDE EMPLOYEES. Rude rude rude and unprofessional. I am always nice to people but I actually go out of my way to try to be sickeningly sweet to these employees because they are all so mean. The manager guy is the WORST though. Maybe the employees are rude and don't care because the manager is a jerk. I have never had good customer service here and stopped going. The food isn't good enough to be treated like I am an inconvenience. Seriously, change management.

Very good local BBQ. The beef ribs are meaty and the pulled pork is juicy. We love the cornbread with corn inside and the collards are so flavorful. A monthly favorite. Oh...Can't forget the Redneck Fondue. It is sinful with the tortilla chips. Yum!

Best BBQ I've had since Memphis' "The Commisary." Not cheap, but you get a LOT for what you pay. I liked having 6 different sauces on the table to try, and kids of any age always like free peanuts!

I went in on 2/8/15 after 5pm my meat was very tasty. My french fries were greasy and cold. The cashier was nice but not overly friendly. The bottled pops are very good. The brownie was a nice taste as well. Downside the dining room was a but messy and low on forks.

Horrible. ...went to 2 locations at different times, ordered 2 different meals. Both bad. Most recent Ribs and chicken burnt. What a disappointment! Food Inspectors should be called to shut this place down for terrible food or retrain the cooks. SAVE YOUR MONEY. .

I stopped by this place one day ago for lunch. It was alright. I'm a big BBQ guy and I treat like pizza (even when it's bad it's still okay). I've been to Urban BBQ before but only to the one in Rockville. That one was great from what I remember. This one was kinda lackluster. Maybe they were just serving reheated BBQ from last night. That would be my guess. I got the pulled pork and brisket with a side of slaw and cornbread. The pork was slathered in sauce and the brisket had an appropriate amount of sauce on it. Too much sauce on that pulled pork. I like sauce, but it was a lot. Slaw was nothing out of this world. Cornbread was okay. I dunno. I had the burble gut afterward, but this was some critically unhealthy food in the middle of my healthy food kick, so that's why I had the burble. Anyway, I'd hit up a different Urban BBQ location if I were you. I'd also go for dinner instead.

Good food. I give one star because the phone staff is rude. I called to put in an order and the girl on the other end of the phone actually sounded annoyed that I wanted to place an order. Same thing happened last time. This has happened before. Shouldn't have to put up with attitude considering the prices are higher than most carry out establishments.

The pork ribs are smoky but moist and very meaty. So good! Pulled pork is what I usually get which is consistently good., This is where we go for always good, reasonably priced barbecue. My son usually gets the burger and says it's one of the best.

I usually go to the Urban BBQ on Rockville Pike, but I went here last week and not only is it just as excellent, there are actually places to sit! The pulled pork, cornbread and mac n' cheese are all amazing, but this past visit I tried the "Buried Corn Dogs", which are smothered in Redneck Fondue and are simply cheese-tastic. The sweet potato fries are also some of the best I've had, especially when dipped in buttermilk ranch. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here.

I was there 9/20/2014 around 4:30pm - 5:30pm. The first word that came to my mind was "I think I was in bbq heaven!" The food was scrumptious! The cornbread, wow! The BBQ on any foods was great. I find that many bbq restaurant market is quite saturated. This place really stood out well! The restaurant employees were very friendly! The cooks took pride in their cooking. Great job everyone! Thank you for making our evening great!

Ate there last week and I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top, while the hubs had the brisket sandwich. We shared a large mac and cheese. Both were good, but nothing to really write home about (he definitely won the order battle, so go with the brisket if you head over there). The mac and cheese was pretty good. It's a low-key place, you order at the counter and then pick up your food. But, it's a bar-b-que place, so that's pretty expected. I didn't think the prices were unreasonable, especially considering that a lot of the items have a lot of time that go into preparation and slow-cooking them. You can either do a sandwich or a plate, and I like that you can do a plate and get the sandwich bread to make a sort of do-it-yourself sandwich with more meat. I consistently wish that places like this would use paper cups instead of styrofoam because it's so much better for the environment, but that's neither here no there (but, note to the managers: switch to paper!). Definitely a place I'll check out again and try some of the other meats and sides, since I work across the street.

Tasteless and sad. Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes are all instant, straight from the box and microwave. Tortillas were basically the cheapo pasty store bought kind. Pulled pork was watery and brisket had almost no smoke flavor whatsoever. Staff was friendly but manager was rude. Will never return or recommend to anyone.

    (1)
  • micah s.

The food was pedestrian. The brisket was incredibly dry. Their sauces were very tasty though. The cornbread and mashed potatoes were Nicely prepared. If you're in a pinch for a quick meal, this place will get the job done. However if you're looking for quality brisket, try elsewhere.

I dropped in here yesterday after seeing since it opened. I love some good BBQ, but I've had trouble finding a place that gets it right. To their credit, Urban Bar-B-Que Company gets it mostly right. When I walked in, I liked how open the layout is. Tables are on both sides, leaving a spacious area in the middle. The walls are adorned with quirky signs and one side has an ADORABLE section of kids chowing down. Seriously, it made me swoon a lil bit. The counter is all the way in the back and has the entire menu written on 3 walls in chalk. That overwhelmed me ENTIRELY. I just don't like seeing all of that at once, trying to figure out what's what. Luckily, the staff person (I presume it was an owner or manager) noticed my completely dumbstruck face (complete with wide eyes and dropped jaw) and passed us a printed menu. He was definitely attentive and friendly, but I felt a bit rushed when we stepped to the side to figure out what to order. I think that's more of a personality thing than rudeness or intentional rushing. But when you have two people who are indecisive with food + a new restaurant, rushing isn't appreciated. We ended up ordering a 2 meat platter w/ pulled pork and brisket, because he said those two are the most popular meats. The platter came with cornbread and I chose the mac n cheese as my side. We also ordered the two-step chili w/ tortilla chips and a pulled pork sandwich. Well, the chili was good, but the chips were a bit stale. The staleness was less noticeable when I dipped them into the chili. The brisket and pulled pork were pretty good. Not the best I've had, but I wasn't mad at it. I also liked the different sauces. I'm not usually a fan of Carolina-style sauce, but it paired well with the pulled pork. The cornbread was a good accompaniment to my meal. They let you pick your own piece from the bunch that sits under a heating lamp at the front counter. You've got your pick of a pretty large piece either way, but it's nice for people who prefer corners to inside pieces. I was really disappointed with the mac n cheese. It tastes like it was straight from a box and didn't really have much cheese. I suppose they use some kind of cheese sauce that settles at the bottom of the cup, so when I dug to the bottom it was a little more tolerable. Either way, I didn't finish it and I won't order the mac n cheese again. It's worth going back, because I'd like to try some of the other things: chicken, ribs, sausage, and greens in particular. But overall, I had more of an experience being in the space than I did eating the food. They're both important to me, but the food is central to my opinion of a restaurant and they fell short this time. It's decent BBQ. Still doesn't fit exactly what I'm looking for, but I assume I'll be looking for that magical place for a long while. I suppose that's the fun of it ...

This place has a GREAT location. if you like Barbequeue, and if you are passing by on the beltway, this is a good place for you to stop for a little take out. We had the Chili, pulled pork, mash potatoes and gravy. (the mashed Potatoes and gravy was very close to KFC, so if you like them- and boy, I do!--- you'll like this. The pulled pork portion seemed small. The taste however, was great. Taste was similar to the chain Red Hot and blue. So, okay food, okay environment, great location. I'd give it maybe another star if an employee didn't give me a really dirty look when I was trying to get into the bathroom he was already in.

The food here seems good enough to know what really good BBQ is, but doesn't quite get there itself. The pulled pork and brisket are quite good, and the sausage and ribs are not bad, but nothing I've had yet really wows me. Most things are well cooked, so there's potential here but the flavors are not very interesting. It benefits from little serious competition at least locally, but that's not really a selling point. The price is on par for quality BBQ so no complaints there. The sides are a bit of a weak point, but who cares? I should mention that I had a bad delivery experience (though a separate service) that will probably prevent my coming back. There was a mix-up about the time of delivery and the food came several hours early. It was a large order for a fairly big event, so it was important to get right. The mix-up itself was probably not Urban BBQ's fault, however they were rather unsympathetic when I called and didn't give me any good options for changing the order. In the end, they re-delivered the same food they had tried to deliver hours before which they had somehow kept warm, and the whole thing was a soggy mess. That was not a good solution. BBQ is something that really has to be just right to be good, as even middling-quality BBQ is not a very pleasant experience. Urban BBQ is good enough to try--and could be very good with some bold new flavors--but didn't impress me enough to keep coming back.

Stopped in for lunch. Small storefront type of place. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, a side of beans and a drink. The pork was a very fine consistency and had an ok taste. The beans had a very rich bold taste which was good for the first few mouthfuls but becomes a little strong after a while. There's nothing cheap on the menu except for a burger special they had going on. All in all, a little pricey for such a small place. Meh.

Rolled into Urban BBQ for a quick meal. Pleasantly surprised with the nice vibe about the place. It had some pretty good music playing and not too loud. The place was clean and no grease smudges on the tables. I got the Pulled Pork plate which came with a choice of a sandwich roll or cornbread and a side. I went with the cornbread and the potato salad for my side. The meat was moist and flavorful, I added a bit of their hot BBQ sauce and it just added to the wonderfulness. The cornbread was moist, warm and had chunks of corn in it which put it over the top. I loved it. I will come back here again to check out some ribs and sausage. If that's as good as what I had tonight I will drive here from Springfield on a regular basis.

We had a variety of meats and sides from Urban. The brisket, pulled pork and chicken were ok....a bit oversauced though. The smoked sausage was gristly and not very juicy. The side dishes were TERRIBLE! I've had better mac and cheese from a box...bland and not cheesy at all. The mashed potatoes were sad instant potatoes with powder packet gravy. Just awful.

Thank God....I found a decent barbecue place near my house! I was really afraid they'd be scarce in MD, and maybe they are, but fortunately that's not my problem. The decor set my expectations fairly high. This place was either decorated by a legitimate barbecue guy, or somebody who knows what those places look like. The Texas flag on the wall maybe a little bit suspect; it's an easy piece of decorating to put up when you don't know what you're really doing. However, the pulled pork was definitely good. I'll have to try the ribs next time I'm here. They also have dominion root beer on tap, which was really good. Traffic on New Hampshire Ave. to get in here was no fun, and the parking lot for most of the shopping center was packed, but there were plenty of spots right in front of this place.

I really like their beef ribs, and the other meays are ok. The mac and cheese can use a little, really a lot, of work if you ask me. I just wish they'd come up with a nice sweet and spicy bbq sauce, instead of the spicy and vinegar base ones they do have.

A miserable experience. Will not return to this location. While my wife swears by the Urban BBQ in Olney, our experience at the NH Ave location has been consistently poor. Three strikes and your out! Nearly everything was wrong with our most recent order. The chilli-cheeseburger I ordered medium was cooked beyond well-done but served cold to the touch. It lacked chill and cheese (yet it came as I requested with the jalapeños on the side!). The french fries were undercooked. The BBQ chicken tortilla salad was poorly chopped and soggy so that the dressing turned runny and flavorless.

I decided to eat at Urban Bar-B-Que for the first time last week. The food was very good and the service was jusy fine. The gentleman that took my order was very patient when I was taking my time to read over the menu on the wall. He was very friendly amd to the point when helping me. The restaurant was very busy and there were a lot of people waiting for orders. My order took less than 7 minutes to come out and my name was called. I enjoyed the simplicity of the plating and thought that that tray, paper plates, and plastic utensils was very fitting of a great Bar-B-que restaurant. Also, all of the sauces that I had the option of putting on my pulled pork were all very good. I recommend Urban Bar-B-Que to someone looking for fresh and affordable food and a great dining experience.

The Good: Beans have a nice smokey flavor. Corn bread isn't bad, and you get to select your own saran-wrapped slice from a tray on the counter. The Rest: For a $19 meal, I expect some service. What I got was a rack of ribs on a piece of brown paper on a tray. It was very primitive. This is an order/pick-up at the counter place. There is no menu other than the chalk board, which does not provide adequate descriptions. The young lady at the counter when I was there seemed very put out when I asked if the rack of ribs came with any sides, since none were mentioned on the board. I wasn't offered any drinks or dessert and didn't bother ordering any because the cashier was so hostile I didn't feel like forking over any more money. The meat was just okay.

We went here for lunch and enjoyed our meal immensely. My fiance enjoys BBQ, but I don't particularly care for it, so I was really glad to see Urban BBQ offers a variety of items. We received our meal very quickly. I had the Savannah style burger--provolone cheese, slab bacon, and "Yella sauce" on an 8 oz burger. The bun held up pretty well to the sauce and juicy burger and it was a struggle to finish it. Quite a burger for $6.69. Note, however, that no fries or other sides come with the burger. My fiance had brisket, cornbread, and mashed potatoes ($8.99). The brisket was very tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were served in rich, dark brown gravy that was delicious. Like other reviewers, we were a little disappointed that the cornbread was shrink-wrapped and under a heat lamp on the counter, but it tasted okay. I would not have thought to try this place had someone not recommended it to me. It is located in the Hillandale Shopping Center and does not look appealing from the outside. The interior, however, was well-kept and clean. The walls were covered with Western-themed decor. We especially loved all the bumper stickers that adorned the counters. The root beer is served from a tap, which seems to be a nice touch. Also, the place has two large flat-screened TVs, which will come in handy now that football season is here. Overall, a very reasonable and delicious option for lunch and dinner. We will be back.

Got the beef salad for a takeout lunch. It took 10 minutes to throw the salad into the clamshell and some beef into a Styrofoam cup. The greens were floppy and the beef had no smoke flavor, with a pretty generic sauce. The bacon bits (?) in the salad were so hard I was afraid I'd break a tooth. Store is a carryout with a few hard seats if you can't wait. At least the stickers they use for decoration were mildly amusing. WTH is all the hype about?

Was really excited to try out the pulled pork sandwich and left disappointed. The pork was delicious, but the sandwich was woefully small, and cost more than $6. It was another $3 for a cup of mashed potatoes with bland gravy on top, and, after a fountain soda, I left $11 lighter and still pretty hungry. I want it to be so much better, but it's not.

Thank you Jesus, I have found a replacement for Frankie D's in Kingston! My boyfriend and I have driven past this place so many times, and finally decided to check it out this past weekend. Pulled pork, collard greens and corn bread for $7!!!!!! SO.GOOD. It's nothing fancy, a few tables, but it looks like it's primarily take out (that's what we got). The pork was great, and it wasn't smothered in BBQ sauce (which is good, you can add it to your own taste). The collard greens were delish too. The corn bread was ok, nothing spectacular, but I only got it since it came with the meal, I wasn't expecting much. My boyfriend had the sweet tea, which was from a dispenser, but he liked it. We'll definitely be back. So excited to find out it's a good BBQ joint!

I've eaten here about 6 times in the last couple of years with mixed impressions. The last time, late January 2014, did not leave me with a favorable one. I had brisket, which was way too salty, collard greens, which was way too sweet, and cornbread, which was also too sweet and not particularly fresh. Just like the several Urban Bar-B-Que restaurants in the chain, this one is prone to considerable variation. I asked the cashier if they added sugar to the collard greens, and she said they didn't, but then checked with the cook, and he said they did. I told him I thought it was way too much sugar, and he said, "Well, it's the same recipe we always use." If that's the case, the recipe isn't good. Good bar-b-que is hard to find, and this place isn't the solution by a long shot.

I love everything about this place. The ribs, chicken, corn bread, slaw, taters... everything is all so good and well cooked. I think I've tried just about the whole menu now. It has been awhile since I have been there, but if I could suggest a meal to a new comer it would have to be the bbq chicken with collard greens and maaaybe some corn bread if the other 2 won't fill you up. It is treat when ever I get a chance to be in the area GRUB OUT. Also, I've been to the rockville location, and while others may aruge which UBBQC they should go to, I say the best bbq is the bbq that is nearest, ESPECIALLY if it is urban bbq =)

A solid barbecue joint in this neck of Silver Springs. I went here with some co-workers, a couple who raved about how good everything was. I would've gone for the ribs, but since I was trying to be proper lady/work-like I decided to go for the pulled pork sandwich. I didn't get any sides since we all shared a basket of fries and some of their redneck fondue. The redneck fondue while small in portion was tasty and flavorful with chili with beans and cubed beef and both cheese sauce and shredded cheese. The meat on my pulled pork sandwich was on the dry, stringy side but flavorful nevertheless. Of the three sauces I had, I actually liked the "yella" sauce the best. Reasonably priced, tasty barbecue joint that's satisfies my work hour meat craving very nicely. Will definitely come back if anything for the ribs and the side of mac n' cheese.

Urban Bar-B-Que Company, located in the Hillandale shopping center just off of 495, has been open since May. It's very similar to it's cousin in Rockville( yelp.com/biz/urban-bar-b… ), but there are some differences, which I will describe for you in rhyme. When you say the word BBQ/Barbecue/Barbeque You are speaking the love language of a boy named Su To get him to eat BBQ, there's not much you need to do Not to mention when he'll get a First to Review He eagerly walked in shortly after twelve And like it's cousin, it had hot sauce on shelves Su was in eager anticipation; he couldn't wait to eat But $17 for a 1/2 rack of ribs, 1 side, and 1 meat? It's true - that is on the pricier side But if the BBQ's good, I'll let it slide I had it with slaw and beef brisket I happily paid and they gave me my ticket It said #114 and they were on #109 "Soon," I thought, "Meat will be mine." "Number 114!" I sprang up and ran Like a kid after an ice cream truck w/ a dollar in his hand The beef was delicious, I'll give UBBQ that It was tender and had a tasty strip of fat The ribs were also tasty and good Flavored with hickory and apple wood The meat wasn't exactly mind blowing But for Hillandale, it was a good showing. The sauces were a bit of a mixed bag So for that, I'll demote UBBQ a tad The red sauce was finger-lickin great But the hot sauce, boy do I hate Mexican flavors in BBQ? What?! Even worse when it tastes like butt The Carolina sauce was really light But the yella sauce, that piece was tight There's one thing here though, I think we can all cheer They have on tap Old Dominion Root Beer Of which, I'm generally not a fan But I do like this stuff, Sam I am So if you're searching for great BBQ near and far Don't go out of your way for UBBQ, it's only 3 stars If you're in the area though, it's pretty darn good But just remember, Hillandale is pretty hood.

This place had power after the Derecho of 2012 and we needed a bite to eat before a flight. I preferred the ribs to the chicken, and the cornbread was decent, although pre-wrapped in plastic. They didn't seem to mind that the Little Lady was throwing fries everywhere on the floor.

Last Friday i was in the area and saw there was an urban bar-b-que. Me and my boyfriend love the food so we decided to stop in. The food was great, but the service was horrible. Our cashier was really rude the whole time she was taking our order. Also did not get my sides i paid for, and when i went up and asked about my sides and pointed out on the receipt that i paid extra, she rudely told me its on my plate, which it was not, that's why i paid extra. While i was eating with my boyfriend, she was " wiping" all the other tables down with a dirty tray and then came by our table while we were eating and literally scraped off anything that was on our table with the same dirty tray she was using for all the others, not a rag, someones tray she picked up. . It was a pretty bad experience coming from a place that has such great food. By looking at the receipt her name is Monica, so try and see if you can get someone else to take your order. Seriously.

I've stopped in a couple of times for dinner and it was ok. But last weekend we had an event and ordered brisket and pulled pork with potato salad. They were excellent! Everyone was asking where we got it! So my advice is to stick to those three items.

I eat there once in a while, and when I do, I'm always happy about the food. The customer service is very polite, and it's a pretty good Texas-style restaurant with the food. The quality of meat is very good, much worth eating. All the condiments and a roll of towels are right at your table, including hot sauce if you like your food extra spicy. I think the chalkboard menu gives it a different, more Tex-Mex look, very suitable for the restaurant. Plus, they serve beer if you drink alcohol. If you're expecting them to take your food to the table and pour your drinks for you, go to Olive Garden!!! This is a self-serve restaurant.

I gave Urban another try. Went with the standard - a half-rack of ribs, dry. The ribs came out wet, but I dealt with it (napkins). No matter. The ribs really were not good. No bark (limp instead of crispy exterior, no discernible difference in taste between the outside of the meat and the inside of the meat), the meat inside was gray (should have been pink to brown, right?), a slightly rubbery texture, and no smoke flavor. Not good. The slaw was ok.

I stopped for lunch yesterday with a friend at Urban BBQ. It's a very cute and casual restaurant with chalk boards for menus and memorabilia hanging around. We ordered the Brisket Chili and had an order of the chili cheese fries. The Brisket Chili is wonderful!! It is a real combination of flavors that comes together in total harmony and is wonderful comfort food. I just loved it and cant wait to go back for more! The chili cheese fries were just OK. They are covered in mostly the sauce from the chili with very little meat and then doused in what must be cheese wiz. The whole thing was a bit of a soggy mess and not that great in flavor. We won't order the fries again but really do look forward to going back to try the many other items on the menu.

Growing up the area, I stopped by the bank and saw this place instead of the KFC I had grown so accustomed to. The interior is decorated in colorful redneck paraphernalia. It's amusing and fun to read while waiting for your food. The wait is not too long, but this place is also not McD's. I had the burger special, a drink, and the bread pudding. I don't eat BBQ often, but I can eat. The burger was just okay for all the hype it got. The bread pudding was very good, but it was so sugary and served in such a large amount that it made me sick. I think it is meant to be shared. Better than a fast food chain. I probably won't come here again, though.

This is another place I sought out to try only because of the good reviews it has received on Yelp. I decided to try the Silver Spring location of Urban Barbecue since a friend lived nearby. We drove over since its way too far from the Silver Spring Metro stop to even think about walking. The strip mall location doesn't exactly scream down home barbecue. I was hoping it was a shack on the side of the road with some old pinic tables next to it. I was surpised at how little this Urban BBQ location was. I think they do alot of takeout business. I ordered a sampler with my choice of three meats. I chose chicken, pulled pork, and beef brisket. The pulled pork and the chicken were delicious. The beef brisket wasn't bad either, although I wish it was a little more tender. The price was on par with other barbecue places in the area. The cornbread was very good, moist with little bits of real corn in it. My friend enjoyed the baby back ribs he ordered. It wasn't the best barbecue I've ever had, but it was pretty good. Their vinegar-based Carolina sauce was tasty and I ended up pouring it on everything, except the cornbread of course.

I came here for lunch earlier today and it wasn't spectacular. Since I was doing take-out, I ordered ahead. I ordered 3 sandwiches and they only gave me one bun for the three on them. I ordered corn bread, and apparently the corn bread is in a side container. They did not tell me this and so i automatically assumed it would be in my bad. The decorations are cute, though. The food also wasn't very good. There were bones in my chicken, and apparently there was a lot of fat in my coworker's brisket.

For the most part I agree with Su. I would love to write a review entirely in rhyme but unfortunately I don't got the time (Or the Talent). Our offerings were... Brisket Plate Chili Cheese Fries Chicken Wings The Brisket plate was the best I have had outside of Texas, it was light on the sauce so you could actually taste the meat. It did have a slight kick to it but it worked well. It was very tasty. The Chili Cheese Fries were somewhat of a let down until I got off my high horse and realized that processed cheese sometimes works well with things, in this case it worked. Oh and their chili has actually pieces of brisket in it, which was really good. The Wings were spicy with a hint of cumin that really brought it all together. Oh and I almost forgot. Growing up my grandma always used to take me to this restaurant in Beaumont called "PO FOLKS" and while their food was attrocious they did have one redeeming quality, Sweet Tea. It wasn't actually tea but more like water with a dash of tea, a shit load of sugar, and a dash of what I could only assume was crack cause that shit was the bomb. Well Urban must have got the recipe because it was bon, tres bon.

It was a snowy day and I was at Starbucks with my cousin, a few doors down from this place. We were deciding on what to eat and this place was the most convenient. Their menu is not very extensive. I wasn't able to eat solid foods that day so I got mash potato because that was the only soft thing they had. It was a side order and I couldn't finish it. My boyfriend and I went here this past Saturday to grab a quick, casual lunch. The atmosphere is casual and cute. You can snack on free peanuts while you wait for your order. There are plenty of bbq sauces and hot sauces to choose from, always a PLUS. We ordered the Soul Rolls that came with the Redneck Fondue, and they were very tasty. Loved the beef brisket, and the bbq pork. However not the best I've ever had. For sides we shared sweet potato fries, and the potato salad. They were OK. Nothing special though. I guess my expectations were a little too high from reading reviews, and word of mouth but it was decent enough. Urban BB-Q is definitely a good place to grab some quick BBQ. I'll be back........!

I'm so glad to have discovered Urban BBQ. My favorites on the menu consist of the brisket, the urban burger, and the pulled chicken sandwich. I usually can't walk out of the place without ordering the key lime pie. I generally take it home and split it into two portions, but if you're up for a challenge after the meal go for the whole thing. It's certainly worth it. Generally speaking I love greens, but something about Urban's didn't seem right to me. I'm sure Jon C. however would disagree that point. The fries are hit or miss. They can either be amazing, or mediocre. Either way, I still order and enjoy them. Some of the items on the menu are a bit heavy and overwhelming, but it's bbq, not vegan fare so it's kinda to be expected. This has become one of my regular haunts. I have much love for Urban.

Just posted another review and thought that I'd update this one: yeah, this place rocks. We went back over Memorial Day weekend and the brisket is consistently great. (Any BBQ place packed with Rolling Thunder bikers has got to be good, right?) My husband said that they changed the cole slaw, and it's even better now. We had different ribs this time, too, and they were delicious. (Not the mammoth ones, maybe spare ribs?) Gotta come up with more reasons to head out that direction; totally worth the trip...

Solid BBQ that won't break the bank. We've been here 3 or 4 times in the past year, and Urban's Soul Rolls are my favorite. It's basically like a home-made hot pocket of meat and cheese in a giant egg roll-like fried goodness wrapping served with "Redneck Fondue," which is an evil conconction of cheese and chili. What is there not to love? I typically get the ribs as well, which are great. Also, there's Dominion Rootbeer on self-serve tap. Obviously, this is not a low-fat eatery, but it's worth a gut-busting visit!

I used to visit the other location in Rockville. It was better than most bbq in the DC area, but that's not saying much; while I love DC and its food choices, for bbq it's a wasteland. The Rockville UB was a step above most local places. Over time, the quality seemed to go downhill a bit. When my office moved to New Hampshire Ave. at White Oak, I thought I'd give this location of UB a try. Very disappointed. The pork is over-moist (like it's been sitting in hot water, as opposed to being natural meat juices). The meat itself was bland, almost as if it was just cooked without any spices or marinade, and completely dependent on the sauces to give it any flavor whatsoever. Others in my lunch group were less critical. However, none of them hail from a real bbq region, so they know not of what they speak.

Solid BBQ spot with character. Had the redneck fondue as we saw it on TV but was not impressed. Would steal the idea and modify it for a football party or something though. Instead of the fondue I would suggest saving your cash for the donut bread pudding. The house root beer was bomb (as in good :) All in all, a very pleasant experience. Prices are steep though. Me and the hubby spent $35. With that said, because the trip is a bit far for me and the prices are up there, we would only visit when the BBQ (beef ribs specifically) hankering is strong.

  • Mina A.

Decent BBQ. I've tried the pulled pork, ribs and pulled chicken. The food is tasty, but I feel the prices are a bit steep. The sides are pretty good too, but you should know the potato salad has a grip of mustard. Sadly, my favorite item on a BBQ menu was not so great at Urban BBQ...the cornbread just didn't taste too fresh. Cornbread disappointment aside, I recommend this place and would probably go here more often if the prices were lower.

I like this place, although the seating can be a little crowded at times. I go for lunch, usually, so am not sure what dinner might be like. I think the sandwich serving sizes are very generous for the price - I don't think you get any more meat for the pricier platter-sizes so keep that in mind if you don't want sides. The collards are nice and buttery - there's also some bacon in there as well. They are traditional southern collards, so soft greens, but not as mushy as some places can be. The mac-n-cheese is pretty standards - nothing particularly amazing. The french fries are also good, if a little greasy, with the skins still on (but thin fries, not wedges). The sweet potato fries are also quite tasty - almost like tempura because they batter the sweet potato fries before they fry them. The cole slaw is not very mayo-ey (which can be good or bad, depending on how you like your slaw) and the corn bread is a "pass" - dry and mostly tasteless with the occasional mummified corn kernel within. Pulled pork is juicy, although I could do without the odd spice-powder mixture they put on top. The "Hot" sauce is not really that spicy and the "Carolina" sauce has a nice vinegar kick to it. The pulled chicken is a little drier (as expected) but a decent "healthy" alternative. The sweet tea is not true southern sweet tea, i.e., not sweet enough to send you into a sugar high. However, given the geography, it'll do. As a side note, the salad is mostly lettuce but, given it's a BBQ joint, perhaps salad isn't their forte. Overall, think it's worth the lunch trip, if you're close by.

This place is a gem hidden in the Hillandale Shopping Center. I've been there a few times - always getting a burger with chili and cornbread on the side. The burgers are cooked perfectly - tender and juicy with tons of flavor. My personal favorite - the Bleu Buffalo Style burger - hits the spot every time. I've stopped by before a few Redskins games to pick up some great tailgating food too! Definitely check this place out if you're in the mood for some mouth watering BBQ food! I'll be back plenty of times!!!

Never tried the burgers until today. It was a fabulously juicy, bacony BBQ burger. Good fries, slaw and rootbeer. If you're in the area, this is a great lunch choice. Would I make a 1/2 hour trek to get there - probably not, but its the best choice in the area.

I ordered a half slab of pork ribs-- very good but a little dry. The middle part was juicy and good, ends dry. Liked the baked beans which are like chili without the meat. Liked the cole slaw. My partner had pulled pork sandwich-- tasty but dry-- needed to add sauce. Bread pudding is toooo sweet. Root beer terrific. We will definitely visit again and try other dishes. Very accessibe, easy parking. Small place with casual atmosphere.
